Marcel Wanders is a product and interior designer who has earned international acclaim for his unique decorative modern style.
Named by Wallpaper* as one of the leading designers of the last 15 years, Marcel’s star first rose in 1996 with the design of the iconic Knotted Chair. In 2001 he co-founded design company Moooi and his design influence has since become ubiquitous, designing for global brands such as B&B Italia, Cappellini, Puma, Bisazza, Poliform, KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines, Flos, Magis, Google, Target, Baccarat and more recently Christofle, M.A.C Cosmetics and M & S.
With a sense of theatricality and a remarkable use of space and textures, Marcel’s interiors have equally garnered international acclaim. His projects include Kameha Grand hotel in Bonn, the Mondrian South Beach hotel in Miami, the Villa Moda Flagship store in Bahrain, and private residences in Amsterdam, Mallorca and Jakarta. In 2009 Marcel launched Wanders & yoo, his collaboration with residential and hotel design company yoo, founded by Philippe Starck.
Many of Marcel’s designs have been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, the V&A Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Central Museum in Utrecht, Museum of Decorative Arts Copenhagen and various Droog Design exhibitions. In 2007 Marcel presented a unique collection at the Salone Del Mobile in Milan, Personal Editions, which were pieces that he had long imagined and held a very special position in his heart. In late 2009 and early 2010, Marcel’s first solo-exhibition, Daydreams, was featured in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Marcel Wanders has been the winner of the Elle Decoration International Design Awards, Designer of the Year in 2006; he has also received the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s modern Design Excellence Award for his significant contribution to the field of Design in 2009. In 2010, The Kameha Grand Bonn hotel was the winner of the MIPIM Awards 2010 in the Hotels category.
Marcel has been featured in leading design magazines and newspapers internationally including the New York Times, Financial Times, Business Week, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Wallpaper, Esquire, Domus, Interni, Blueprint, Design Report, Frame, I.D. magazine, Abitare, Nylon, Elle Decoration and Icon. In April 2003, The Washington Post proclaimed: “Marcel Wanders, the design world’s favourite star”, while the The Financial Times has declared that “Marcel Wanders and the Moooi company he co-owns have made contemporary Dutch design synonymous with exuberant creativity”.
