typology : Palace Residence
location : Abu Dhabi, U.A.E
This palace compound spans over 60 acres along the western coast of Abu Dhabi Island and is composed of several independent buildings. Its layout follows a traditional diagram common to palaces across the Arabian Gulf — a spatial solution shaped by cultural values and local lifestyle requirements.
The compound is organized into three primary components: the Majlis (formal reception hall), the main family residence, and a dedicated house for the eldest son. Supporting these are a series of secondary structures, including service buildings, garages, a smaller guest house, and a private marina. Commissioned by Sheikh Hamdan, who served as Deputy Prime Minister, the design had to strike a balance between formal prestige and personal privacy. The architectural concept responds by distributing key functions across distinct, purpose-built structures, each separated by thoughtfully composed landscaping that maintains both visual harmony and spatial independence.
Despite the physical separation of buildings, a unified architectural language ties the ensemble together. Red-tiled roofs and strategically placed skylights create continuity, while the sea-facing location allows water to become a central design element. Both the Majlis and the main residence are set within expansive circular pools, giving the illusion of floating structures and extending the coastal character of the site. The Majlis, positioned near the main gate, serves as the ceremonial core. Featuring a grand arrival sequence, it includes a large reception hall, multiple lounges, a formal dining room, and full service amenities. Architecturally, it presents the boldest expression within the compound — its monumental entrance fuses contemporary form with a reinterpretation of traditional Middle Eastern geometry, creating an iconic and welcoming threshold.
Connected directly to the private marina via a landscaped pathway that crosses over water, the Majlis offers seamless access to an enclosed dome pavilion at the bay. The marina itself is shaded by a large-span canopy and accommodates vessels up to 50 meters in length. Centrally positioned, it is framed on one side by a smaller residence for one of the sons, and on the other by the main family palace. The family residence is carefully nestled within lush vegetation, ensuring total privacy. It exudes a sense of intimacy, located close to the eldest son’s home and surrounded by landscaped gardens and children’s play areas. At the same time, it retains a sense of grandeur, with a monumental portico defining the entry and panoramic views over the sea and marina. The surrounding water elements reinforce its coastal identity and create a serene, immersive atmosphere.
